Who we are

Kopanong Local Municipality is a Category B municipality located in the southern part of the Free State Province, South Africa. The name “Kopanong” is a Sesotho word meaning “a place of meeting”, which reflects the municipality’s role as a centre of cooperation between government and the community.

The municipality is responsible for providing basic services, promoting social and economic development, and ensuring good governance within its area of jurisdiction. Kopanong Local Municipality serves the towns of Bethulie, Edenburg, Fauresmith, Jagersfontein, Philippolis, Trompsburg, Springfontein, Reddersburg and Gariep Dam, as well as surrounding rural areas and farming communities.

Kopanong Local Municipality operates within the framework of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, the Municipal Systems Act, and the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA). These laws guide the municipality in fulfilling its developmental mandate, which includes delivering sustainable services, encouraging public participation, and managing public resources responsibly.

The municipality is committed to improving the quality of life of all its residents by ensuring access to essential services such as water, sanitation, electricity, refuse removal, and road maintenance. In addition, the municipality plays a key role in facilitating local economic development (LED), supporting small businesses, tourism, agriculture, and job creation initiatives.

Kopanong Local Municipality believes that effective service delivery can only be achieved through strong partnerships with communities, traditional leaders, businesses, civil society organisations, and other spheres of government. Public participation is therefore central to the municipality’s planning and decision-making processes, particularly through the Integrated Development Plan (IDP), budget consultations, and ward committee structures.
